What to Expect with an Acupuncture Treatment
Acupuncture involves the placing of fine, painless needles at specific acupoints on the body to activate blood and oxygen flow. I use only sterile, single-use, disposable needles in my practice.
Before we begin treatment, I will ask you to complete a full health survey that details your symptoms and tells me about your general health and lifestyle. From this information I will create a comprehensive treatment plan. Treatments last anywhere from 50 to 60 minutes, with the number of treatments dependent upon the nature of the problem, how long you have had the condition and how fast you respond to treatment.
Before beginning treatment, I will feel pulse points in each wrist that give me diagnostic signs about your organ systems and overall health. I may also ask to look at your tongue, which is another indicator of your overall health and balance.
Most people feel no pain when the needles are inserted and find the experience very relaxing. Once the needles have been inserted you may feel a vague numbness, a dull ache, or a sensation of energy spreading around the needle. This is an indication of Qi (oxygen) moving through the area. The sensations are typically momentary and vary by person and treatment. After treatment, you may feel energized or experience a deep sense of relaxation and well-being.
Please bring any questions to your appointment and I will be happy to answer them before we begin. Wear loose, comfortable clothing in order to have easy access to acupuncture points.
Try not to come on an empty stomach, but also avoid large meals, heavy exercise, drugs or alcohol immediately before and up to 6 hours after treatment.
Between visits take note of any changes that have occurred such as the alleviation of pain, pain moving to other areas, or changes in the frequency or quality of symptoms.
